Arroyo Grande Employees Donate Backpacks for Homeless Children

Posted in:
On March 14, 2013 Arroyo Grande Community Hospital employees donated more than 40 backpacks to the 5Cities Homeless Coalition for school aged children and teens.

Sadly, there are more than 275 homeless children attending school in the Lucia Mar School District. Through the District's Families in Transition Program the backpacks donated by the employees of Arroyo Grande Community Hospital will be given to these students, along with the school supplies they need to help the children succeed in school.  Even though the school year is nearly complete, there are new children coming into the district on a daily basis, often times with few or no school supplies.

“The 5Cities Homeless Coalition is working to strengthen the South County community by mobilizing resources, hope and support for the homeless and those facing poverty in our community. One such way we do this is to work with the community to address unmet needs, such as the need for school back packs for homeless students,” says Janna Nichols, Executive Director of 5Cities Coalition.

Additional backpacks will be needed in the coming fall when school begins again. The backpack drive was organized by members of the hospital’s Mission Services team.
