Surgical weight loss, or bariatric surgery helps you lose weight and may improve or resolve serious health problems associated with complex or morbid obesity.

Our team has expertise in each of the bariatric surgeries described below. We will discuss each procedure with you in order to determine which one is best.

Gastric Bypass

In this operation, your stomach is reduced from the size of a football to the size of a golf ball. Your now-smaller stomach is attached to the middle of the small intestine, bypassing a section of small intestine (duodenum and jejunum), which limits the absorption of calories.  Bypassing the duodenum induces metabolic changes that help improve or resolve Type 2 diabetes.

Gastric Sleeve

In this procedure, your stomach is restricted by stapling, and divided vertically, removing more than 85 percent. Weight loss occurs by restricting the amount of food that can be consumed.

Gastric Banding

Our program no longer offers Lap Band (Adjustable Gastric Banding) Surgery as a primary weight loss operation. The surgeons of the WLSICC have a great deal of experience with Lap Bands (Adjustable Gastric Bands), but do not offer this operation as we believe it is not an effective long term weight loss solution for the majority of patients.

However, patients who have an existing Lap Band CAN be cared for in our clinic.  Patients with an existing Lap Band who desire evaluation, or desire removal (explant) of the Band will be evaluated by one of our team, and are typically offered intensive dietary counseling, involvement in our support and education groups in addition to surgical attention. Frequently we are able to ‘rescue’ patients who have not been successful with the band.

Lap Band system removal combined with conversion to an effective weight loss operation such as Sleeve gastrectomy or Gastric Bypass is often the most effective solution for patients who have problems or have not been successful with a Band.

Please bring a copy of your past medical records that give details regarding the date of your surgery, and what type of lap band you have in place.
