St. John’s Hospital Camarillo and St. John’s Regional Medical Center Award Nearly $300,000 to Local Nonprofits

Grants to help provide critical health and human services to Ventura County residents

OXNARD, Calif. – February 14, 2023 – Dignity Health— St. John's Hospital Camarillo (SJHC) and St. John's Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) recently awarded nearly $300,000 in community grants to nonprofits in Ventura County that work to provide Ventura County residents with critical health and human services.

Grants are awarded through Dignity Health’s Community Grants Program, which sets forth to help non-profit organizations whose efforts aid in building healthier communities by improving health and living conditions. 

“Partnering with local nonprofits who share our vision and mission of improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, is essential to the well-being of our community,” said George West, Vice President of Mission Integration at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital Camarillo. “Collectively, our efforts will have a significant impact in the lives of the most underserved populations in our community.”

Organizations selected to receive 2023 Dignity Health Community Grants include:

No Limits for Deaf Children   |  Awarded $100,000

The Oxnard-based nonprofit offers an after-school program free of charge to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Grant funding supports the after-school program and the one-of-a-kind services it offers, such as individual auditory, speech, and language therapy, in addition to academic tutoring, literacy classes, enrichment programs, parent education, family support, and audiological services.

Westminster Free Clinic  |  Awarded $70,000

Westminster Community Care Center is a private, non-profit community care center serving the working poor and uninsured of Ventura County. As a community care center, the organization’s goal is to provide low-income people with early access to health care and health-supporting programs and services in order to prevent more costly mental and physical health problems.

Foodshare   |  Awarded $30,000

Food Share is dedicated to leading the fight against hunger in Ventura County. Food Share distributes millions of pounds of healthy food every year through its own programs, such as drive-thru food box distributions, Senior Kits (CSFP), and Kids’ Farmers’ Market, as well as through distribution via partner agencies.

Livingston Memorial Nurse Association & Hospice  |  Awarded $25,000

Livingston cares for those in the community who need a little extra help to heal at home, are experiencing a serious or end-of-life illness, or suffered the loss of a loved one. Livingston ensures that hundreds of patients and family members are cared for on any given day by a team that includes physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, registered dieticians, certified nursing assistants, social workers, chaplains, counselors and volunteers. 

Camarillo YMCA LIVESTRONG Foundation  |  Awarded $25,000

The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. YMCA staff, trained in supportive cancer care, work with participants to achieve goals such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

Gabriel’s House  |  Awarded $24,242

Gabriel’s House is a shelter for women and children that aims to end the cycle of homelessness by encouraging, equipping, and empowering the women and children who live at Gabriel’s House with hope for healing and a better life. The organization provides women with tools and support for leading healthy, productive, independent lives. The women or mothers with children who arrive at Gabriel’s House are provided with emergency shelter, transitional living, food, case management, coaching, mentoring, and life skills training.
