The neurocritical care unit, also called the neurological intensive care unit (neuro ICU), is a dedicated environment that provides personalized care for patients with severe or life-threatening neurological emergencies. Neurocritical care may be required for any life-threatening or serious neurological condition, including:
You may enter the neuro ICU due to conditions including brain trauma, life-threatening seizure episode, stroke, or after undergoing neurosurgery. Nurses directly monitor you at all times while you are in the neurocritical care unit. Once you are more stable, you may be transferred to a subacute neurological care unit.
In some cases, patients in the neuro ICU are unconscious much of the time or require breathing support by mechanical ventilation. Often patients are sedated or put into an induced coma as a part of treatment.
