The Hospital Today

In 2013, we changed our name to Mark Twain Medical Center to reflect that we plan to become the center of health care in Calaveras County. The name also reflects the diversity of services provided by Mark Twain, ranging from inpatient services to physician clinics located throughout the county.

Our Commitment to Exceed Expectations

Founded in 1951, Mark Twain Medical Center is a 25-bed, full-access hospital providing inpatient acute care, outpatient services and emergency services fully licensed by the California Department of Health Services and accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and the California Medical Association.

In 2013, Mark Twain embarked on a plan to exceed the expectations of those we serve by first re-examining our Mission statement, the reason for our existence. We cultivated valuable input from our Board, Medical Staff, employees and the community. Our new Mission reflects that we want to serve the health care needs of all Calaveras County citizens, in collaboration with our partner Dignity Health and their excellent hospitals. We changed our name to Mark Twain Medical Center to reflect our goal of becoming the center of health care in Calaveras County. The name also reflects the diversity of services provided by Mark Twain, ranging from inpatient services to physician clinics located throughout Calaveras County. Find out the range of health care services we offer.

While we pursue our vision of exceeding expectations through the goals contained in our Pillars of Excellence: Patient Loyalty, Medical Staff Development, Employee Development, Quality, Services and Financial Stewardship.

In addition to these, we ask our staff to remember and practice our Values. Our Values are- Excellence, Dignity, Collaboration, Justice and Stewardship, along with our recently revised Standards of Behavior, remind us of how we are to behave and treat one another. For example, we recently implemented the Platinum Rule -- to treat others the way they want to be treated. The achievement of our Pillar goals is critical to our future success, but these goals will only be achieved if we live our Values and Standards of Behavior every day.

Expanding Local Health Care Services

In January of 2013, we opened the first full-service Cancer Center in Calaveras County. This center provides chemotherapy and other infusion services. In addition, we now also provide PET/CT services, which are often required by cancer patients. Learn more about the Mark Twain Cancer Center.

In October of 2013, we opened an Orthopedic Specialty Care Clinic in Angels Camp. Learn more about our Orthopedic program and our doctors' 40 years of experience.

Last Fall we brought Telehealth technology to our Emergency Department and ICU. With fast treatment, the consequences of strokes can be diminished. Telehealth offers 24/7 stroke diagnosis and treatment for patients of Mark Twain Medical Center by connecting Mercy Telehealth Network specialists in Sacramento with doctors and patients at Mark Twain Medical Center via high-speed data lines. Learn more about this remarkable technology available to our stroke and ICU patients.

This Spring we opened Mark Twain Heart Center in San Andreas, We provide quality heart care, delivered by board- certified cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. Learn more about our unique combination of services.

We offer InQuicker, an online ER waiting service. You can get an estimated treatment time online, and wait at home. Find out the next available treatment time by using InQuicker.

Medical Staff and Employment Impact

Our Medical Staff, averaging 85, represent a range of specialties broad enough to ensure that patients will be able to secure quality medical care in a rural community.

In addition to being a major provider of health services, we are also a major source of jobs for area residents. On average, more than 300 people are employed at the hospital, its three Specialty Care Centers and its five Family Medical Centers.

Mark Twain Medical Center enjoys the support of a large organization needed to meet the challenges of a changing health care environment. Similarly, our linkage with the business leaders, local government, and our neighbors will preserve the unique fabric of the hospital and its role in the community.
