Michael Smith, MDMichael A. Smith, MD, is the Associate Chief of Thoracic Surgery and the Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation at Norton Thoracic Institute, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and also sees patients at the Dignity Health – Cancer Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Smith specializes in thoracic oncology, lung transplantation, and esophageal surgery. Dr. Smith is board certified in both general surgery and thoracic surgery. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation, and the Western Thoracic Surgical Association.

Dr. Smith earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed general surgery training and thoracic surgery training at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

During his general surgery training, Dr. Smith was awarded a National Research Service Award from the U.S. Public Health Service and a Thoracic Surgery Foundation Research Fellowship Award for research in lung transplantation. He then joined the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, where he was the Surgical Director of Lung Transplantation and Director of Lung Volume Reduction Surgery.
