Overview

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death in women in the United States and the developed world.  Research has identified risk factors specific to women such as adverse pregnancy outcomes, or conditions more prominent in women such as rheumatologic or mental health disorders.  While public health initiatives have increased awareness in these areas, there is still confusion among health care clinicians about risk assessment and best practice with regards to management of women with heart disease.  A review of the most current evidence-based guidelines for the prevention of heart disease in women with a focus on the management of diseases as catered to the unique pathophysiology of women, will provide medical practitioners with a clear understanding of the best practice to ensure women are not just treated as “little men”.

Target Audience

This is the 2nd Annual Women’s Heart & Vascular Symposium hosted by Dignity Health’s Women’s Heart Health Program in Arizona through CommonSpirit Health’s initiative across the United States to improve heart health in women. We intend to provide attendees with updates on the most current issues concerning CVD in women.  This full day virtual symposium is for all healthcare clinicians caring for women today including cardiologist, cardiothoracic surgeons, obstetricians/gynecologists, emergency medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, endocrinologists, oncologists, rheumatologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, fellows, and medical students.  It will focus on the continuum of care from prevention to early diagnosis and treatment strategies for heart disease in women.    

Learning Objectives

  • Review health disparities highlighted by COVID-19
  • Assess how to risk stratify women, using novel risk factors such as adverse pregnancy outcomes, menopause, rheumatologic conditions, psychosocial factors and genetic testing
  • Recognize the relationship between breast cancer and heart disease
  • Understand the importance of multidisciplinary collaborative care to improve health outcomes
  • Better understand the diagnosis and management of peripartum cardiomyopathy
  • Analyze the practice guidelines for treatment of women with coronary artery disease percutaneous and surgically
  • Become aware of diagnosis and best management of spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD)
  • Understand how advanced mechanical circulatory support may help in several female-specific cardiac conditions
  • Develop an approach to select best diagnostic testing for symptomatic women with suspected ischemic heart disease and review non-invasive imaging with stress testing compared to coronary CT angiography
  • Understand sex-differences in outcomes of arrhythmias and critical limb ischemia
  • Understand percutaneous treatment of mitral valve disease with MitraClip and transcutaneous mitral valve placement and potential gender disparities seen in management
  • Understand transcatheter aortic valve replacement and potential gender disparities seen in management
  • Understand heart failure subtypes that predominately affect women and gender disparities in the use of guideline-directed treatment
  • Understand best practice for diabetes management in the cardiac patient
  • Understand the benefit of a plant-based diet
  • Understand the importance of research on improving the management of cardiovascular care in women
