Stroke Symptoms: Know What to Look for
A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either by a clot or a burst blood vessel. This can cause brain cells to die, leading to lasting damage. Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke is crucial for prompt treatment and improving outcomes.
Think BE-FAST to identify a stroke:
- Balance: Are you having trouble with balance/dizziness?
- Eyes: Is there a loss of vision in one or both eyes?
- Face drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the smile uneven?
- Arm weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Speech difficulty: Is speech slurred, garbled, or difficult to understand? Can the person repeat a simple sentence correctly?
- Time to call emergency services: If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if they disappear, call 999 or your local emergency number immediately.
Other potential stroke symptoms can include sudden confusion, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, and severe headaches with no known cause.
Our Specialized Stroke Services Include:
Rapid IV Thrombolytic Therapy (Clot-Busting Drug) Administration:
- We offer expedited administration of Tenecteplase (TNKase), a critical intravenous thrombolytic agent, within the crucial 4.5-hour therapeutic window from stroke symptom onset.
- Our streamlined process, starting with advance patient data from Emergency Medical Services (EMS), ensures immediate readiness upon arrival at our Emergency Department.
- As a certified facility for IV thrombolytic administration, we provide FDA-approved medication for ischemic stroke.
- For acute ischemic stroke patients with large vessel occlusions (LVOs), our specialized interventional team, in partnership with the renowned Barrow Neurological Institute, performs advanced mechanical thrombectomy.
- This minimally invasive procedure physically retrieves large blood clots, maximizing the restoration of cerebral blood flow and significantly improving neurological outcomes.
- We often offer an extended treatment window for thrombectomy compared to IV thrombolytic therapy.
