Stroke Symptoms: Know What to Look for

A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either by a clot or a burst blood vessel.This can cause brain cells to die, leading to lasting damage. Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke is crucial for prompt treatment and improving outcomes.

Think BE-FAST to identify a stroke:

  • Balance: Are you having trouble with balance/dizziness?
  • Eyes: Is there a loss of vision in one or both eyes?
  • Face drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the smile uneven?
  • Arm weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • Speech difficulty: Is speech slurred, garbled, or difficult to understand? Can the person repeat a simple sentence correctly?
  • Time to call emergency services: If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if they disappear, call 999 or your local emergency number immediately.

Other potential stroke symptoms can include sudden confusion, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, and severe headaches with no known cause.
