HIPAA is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act passed by Congress in 1996. HIPAA requires that every healthcare organization must monitor compliance, have ongoing management of policies and procedures, and sets national standards for:
- Privacy of confidential protected health information (PHI);
- Security of health information - physical, technical and administrative security measures; and
- Electronic exchange of health information.
