Sequoia receives 12 Healthgrades awards in the areas of cardiac surgery, pulmonary care, and gynecologic surgery.

REDWOOD CITY, CA. (October 18, 2017) – Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital has been recognized as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for cardiac surgery for the third consecutive year by Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, compare, and connect with physicians and hospitals. Sequoia Hospital received 12 awards total in the areas of cardiac surgery, treatment of pulmonary disease, gynecologic surgery, patient safety, and patient experience.

“The cardiac surgery team at Sequoia Hospital’s Heart & Vascular Institute is known for their expertise in performing complex heart surgeries with outstanding results,” said Bill Graham, Sequoia Hospital president. “This recognition underscores the excellence of that team and the unsurpassed care we provide to patients right here in our community.”

These achievements are part of new findings released in the Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally, and at the local level, and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes.

Sequoia also was the recipient of the Healthgrades Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award (2)016-2018; was recognized among the top 5 percent in the nation for cardiac surgery (2)016-2018; and received five-star awards for valve surgery (2)016-2018, treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (2)018, and gynecologic surgery (2)017. A 5-star rating indicates that clinical outcomes at Sequoia are better than expected in these areas. Earlier this year, Sequoia also was recognized for two distinctions in quality excellence from Healthgrades: the 2017 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ and the 2017 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™.

About the Report

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, and assessed hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5 star (s)tatistically significantly better than expected, 3 star (not statistically different from expected), and 1 star (s)tatistically significantly worse than expected categories. The complete Healthgrades 2018 Report to the Nation with detailed cohort-specific outcomes data, hospital-specific quality achievements, and detailed study methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality
