REDWOOD CITY, CA. (March 26, 2018) – Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital has once again received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.

“This designation is a testament to the prompt diagnosis and treatment provided by Sequoia’s experienced stroke team that leads to improved outcomes for our patients,” said Bill Graham, Sequoia Hospital president. “Response time is the most critical element, as a patient can lose two million brain cells per minute after a stroke. Our team works tirelessly to provide safe, high-quality, and fast stroke care to our community.”

Established in 2003, Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers is awarded for a two-year period to Joint Commission-accredited acute care hospitals. Sequoia Hospital underwent a rigorous onsite review during which Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements, including program management, the delivery of clinical care, and performance improvement.

Stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
