Sequoia Hospital Receives 5-Star Rating for Quality from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Posted in:

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (March 4, 2019) – Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital has again received a 5-Star Overall Hospital Rating, the highest possible, for the quality of its care from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Only 293 hospitals nationwide received a 5-star rating.

“Sequoia Hospital is a very special place, and it’s because of our exceptional physicians, nurses, and staff,” said Bill Graham, Sequoia Hospital President. “They deliver a distinct combination of clinical excellence and heartfelt compassion to our community, and the high quality of this care truly sets us apart.”

In addition to the Overall Hospital Rating, CMS released data updates in several key areas. Among the data updates released by CMS, highlights for Sequoia Hospital include: emergency wait times lower than the California average, zero early elective newborn deliveries, and patient experience scores higher than the national average.

The Overall Hospital Rating is based on hospital inpatient and outpatient quality program data. Hospitals are rated on up to 60 quality measures including cardiac surgery, treatment of heart failure, treatment of stroke, joint replacement, wait time in the ER, and many others. These measures fall into seven categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging. The overall hospital rating is calculated using a summary score from these categories. The national average is three out of five stars.

The 5-Star Overall Hospital Rating is one of several quality recognitions Sequoia Hospital has received recently. Sequoia recently received its fifth consecutive ‘A’ grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, and in 2018 was one of only 35 hospitals nationwide to receive the Leapfrog Group Top General Hospital award. The hospital was also recognized with the 2018 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ from Healthgrades, placing them among the top 15 percent of hospitals nationwide. This year, Sequoia Hospital received several Healthgrades awards for services that align with quality measures assessed for the CMS Overall Hospital Rating, including cardiac surgery.
