New computed tomography (CT) imaging equipment for patient use within services of stroke, trauma, heart, orthopedic and cancer has been fully donor-funded through contributions to the Sequoia Hospital Foundation.
Redwood City, Calif. (Aug. 5, 2022) – Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital has announced the full funding of a $4M dual-source CT scanner and the completion of the Sequoia Hospital Foundation’s Imaging for Tomorrow fundraising campaign.
A CT scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around the body and, using advanced computer processing, creates cross-sectional images of bones, internal blood vessels and soft tissues. At Sequoia Hospital, physicians rely on CT imaging for over 7,500 patients annually.
This new equipment will help to further elevate the quality of care across Sequoia’s Heart and Vascular Institute, Precision Biopsy Program, Stroke Program, Center for Total Joint Replacement, Neurology Services, and Emergency and Trauma Services. Versatile and ahead of its time, the quality of this CT imaging will advance Sequoia's award-winning care to even greater heights.
“This fundraising campaign is an investment in the high-quality care at Sequoia Hospital,” said Bill Graham, Sequoia Hospital President and CEO. “With the partnership of our hospital’s foundation and our many supporters, we will remain at the forefront of excellence. Through the utilization of this technology our care providers across multiple specialties will be able to continue to grow their practice and expertise.”
Whereas Sequoia’s existing 64-slice CT machine utilizes a single imaging head, dual-source CT technology uses two x-ray sources at right angles to each other to double the speed of the test and produce dramatically sharper images of the scanned area. The result is a significant reduction in radiation to the patient and a high-quality image that can be used to guide a surgeon to the right area, identify tumors, or study and monitor blood vessels, all of which are critical to improving patient outcomes. Once again, Sequoia Hospital will be one of only a few non-academic hospitals in the nation to bring this technology to its patients.
“Cardiac surgery can be full of surprises. With high-quality imaging prior to an operation, we will be able to plan for safer surgical procedures. This technology is tremendously valuable and well ahead of its time. It will be a significant diagnostic advancement for Sequoia Hospital,” states Luis Castro, MD, Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Sequoia Hospital.
The Impact of Philanthropy
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020, financial resources were diverted for the emergency response at Sequoia Hospital. During this time, many local individuals have stepped up to provide additional contributions to support the high-quality and world-class care available to the community. With the guidance of Jennifer Svihus, CFRE, president of the Sequoia Hospital Foundation, funds continued to be directed into the Imaging for Tomorrow campaign.
“We have persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic and our community continues to show tremendous support for Sequoia Hospital,” commented Jennifer on her role in fundraising for significant projects at Sequoia Hospital. “I have the privilege of working with our supporters to show their gratitude in gifts towards projects that make a difference in the care provided daily at the hospital.”
The $4M funding of the dual-source CT scanner was made possible with the support of more than 130 individuals, with a significant lead gift of $1M. This technology will be coming to Sequoia Hospital in 2023.
