Curriculum
The Morehouse School of Medicine–Bakersfield Memorial Hospital Transitional Year Residency Program follows a 13-block structure, with each block lasting approximately four weeks.
Rotations take place primarily at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, providing residents with comprehensive clinical exposure across inpatient wards, intensive care units, and outpatient clinics at Clinica Sierra Vista.
Our curriculum is designed to build a strong clinical foundation, preparing residents for advanced specialty training. Throughout the one-year program, residents will complete:
- 24 weeks of fundamental clinical skills in the primary specialties of internal medicine, critical care, and 140 hours in emergency medicine.
- A 4-week Ambulatory Care General Internal Medicine rotation to fulfill the 140-hour ambulatory experience requirement.
- 20 weeks of the additional required rotations that include medical, surgical, and hospital-based specialties in services important to the residents future career tracks; As part of those rotations the residents will have:
- 4 weeks of General Surgery
- 2 weeks of Anesthesiology
- 2 weeks of Addiction Medicine
- 12 weeks of elective rotations, tailored to each residents’ career goals.
This structured curriculum ensures a well-rounded clinical experience, equipping residents with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their future specialties.
