Marian Regional Medical Center earns top grade from Leapfrog Group

Facility lands top marks in Hospital Safety for Fall 2023 grading cycle

Marian Regional Medical Center landed the top grade from The Leapfrog Group in its Fall 2023 Hospital Safety grades.

The hospital in Santa Maria earned an ‘A’ from Leapfrog, a national nonprofit watchdog that sets standards for excellence in patient care.

“I’m incredibly proud of our team’s hard work and relentless pursuit of excellence at Marian Regional Medical Center,” said Sue Andersen, President and CEO, Marian Regional Medical Center. “We celebrate this achievement with great pride. Earning a Leapfrog ‘A’ grade in hospital safety reflects our commitment to the highest quality of patient care and patient well-being.”

Leapfrog assigns grades to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally.

According to Leapfrog, this cycle only 30% of hospitals earned an ‘A’ grade, while 24% earned a ‘B,’ 39% earned a ‘C,’ 7% earned a ‘D,’ and about 1% earned an ‘F.’

Among 283 California hospitals evaluated in the report, 87 received the gold-standard ‘A’ safety grade and 74 earned a ‘B,’ while 95 earned a ‘C’ and 23 earned a ‘D.’ A total of four hospitals in the state received an ‘F,’ according to The Leapfrog Group.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually in the fall and spring.

“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Marian Regional Medical Center made a true commitment to put patients first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”
