Take Control of Your Health: Cancer Screenings for Men
Use Men’s Health Month to raise awareness on the importance of cancer screenings
Why Screenings Matter
Prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers are among the most common cancers affecting men. According to the National Cancer Institute, these cancers will account for hundreds of thousands of diagnoses this year. The good news? Screenings can catch these cancers early, when treatment is often more effective.
"Early detection is key to survival," emphasizes Cynthia Maldonado, RN, Supervisor for Cancer Outreach at Mission Hope Cancer Center. "Most cancers in the early stages don't show symptoms, making screenings essential. An early diagnosis is more likely to be curable and easier to treat."
Screening Guidelines: Are You Due?
Here's a quick guide to recommended screenings for men at average risk:
- Colorectal Cancer: Start at age 45. A colonoscopy is recommended every 10 years if you have no personal or family risk factors.
- Lung Cancer: Ages 50-80, and a current smoker or quit within the past 15 years, and a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years. The recommended screening is a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan.
- Prostate Cancer: Starting at age 45, discuss PSA and Digital Rectal Exams with your doctor. Frequency (every 1-2 years) depends on your PSA level.
Important Note: These are general guidelines. If you have a personal or family history of cancer, talk to your doctor about a personalized screening plan.
