Eye Care (Ophthalmology)

Ophthalmology deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. Mercy’s specialists have expertise in managing the full spectrum of eye care, from diagnosis to delicate eye surgery. Some of the eye problems Mercy’s ophthalmologists treat include:
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Corneal and eye surface disease
  • Crossed eyes (strabismus)

Many eye problems are related to other medical conditions, such as diabetes and autoimmune or thyroid disease. Under these circumstances, Mercy Medical Group's ophthalmologists work closely with physicians in other medical specialties to diagnose and treat the underlying problem.

Mercy Medical Group’s Ophthalmology Department is dedicated to providing accurate diagnosis and the best treatment options for patients. To aid in this, they use diagnostic instruments, such as the Corneal Topographer, which maps the surface of the cornea aiding in the diagnosis of certain eye conditions such as astigmatism and keratoconus and also allows for enhanced evaluation for cataract surgery and contact lens fitting. The ophthalmology team also uses Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) which allows for precise evaluation of the optic nerve and retina for aiding the detection of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and a variety of eye diseases specific to the retina.

Mercy Medical Group’s ophthalmologists see patients in our Midtown (Sacramento), San Juan (Carmichael), and Folsom care centers.

Optometry is a medical profession that deals with nonsurgical medical eye care and vision problems. Some of the common eye problems Mercy Medical Group's optometrists manage include:

  • Diabetes and diabetic retinopathy
  • Eye infections like bacterial conjunctivitis and “pink eye”
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Binocular vision problems

We provide primary eye care for patients of all ages, and also work closely with primary care physicians, pediatricians and other medical specialties. Our optometrists are trained to provide high quality eye care, including accurate glasses and contact lens fitting.
