Beating Heart Surgery
Traditional heart surgery requires stopping the patient's heart with drugs. Doctors then depend on machines to circulate blood to the patient's brain and other internal organs while repairing the patient's heart. But thanks to the skill and experience of Mercy heart surgeons and support staff, 90 percent of our heart surgeries can be done without stopping the heart. In those cases, heart-lung machines are not required and patients can avoid many post-operative side effects and return more quickly to a normal routine.
For patient experiencing an ST-elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI heart attack, time is critical. The first 90 minutes after a heart attack makes all the difference. STEMI heart attacks are caused by a blood clot, and the faster doctors can open the blocked artery, the less chance of permanent heart damage. As a designated STEMI Receiving Center, Mercy Heart Center can diagnose a STEMI heart attack and clear a blocked artery in less than 90 minutes.
