Barrow launches only clinical study in Arizona to research Frontotemporal Dementia

 1 minute read time

(PHOENIX, Ariz. – Feb. 17, 2023) – Barrow Neurological Institute at Dignity Health St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is the only center in Arizona that is conducting a clinical study to research the efficacy of a new medication to slow the progression of Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), the same condition actor Bruce Willis was diagnosed with recently.

The clinical trial, led by principal investigator Dr. Anna Burke, director of the Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders program at Barrow, will also assess whether the medication can halt the condition from developing among those with a genetic mutation that puts them at risk of developing FTD in the future.

FTD is a progressive neurological disease in which neurons in the frontal lobes and temporal anterior of the brain decrease in size or become damaged. FTD is rare and approximately 60- percent of people who are diagnosed with the condition are between the ages of 45 and 64.
