(PHOENIX - July 2, 2025) – Fireworks are set to light up the sky on the 4th of July. But, for some, what’s supposed to be a sparkling celebration can unfortunately end in a hospital visit. Hospitals across the country tend to see a ‘boom’ in the number of patients experiencing hand and head injuries due to fireworks over major holiday weekends like July 4th.
“Firework injuries are nearly always preventable,” said Dr. Jordan Weinberg, medical director of the Level I Trauma Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. “Simple measures can keep you and those around you safe as you celebrate Independence Day.”
More than 14,700 million people were treated for firework injuries in emergency rooms across the country in 2024, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Data shows this number is 52-percent from the year prior.
Dr. Weinberg suggests leaving firework shows up to the professionals, but if you are choosing to use consumer fireworks, here are some tips to help you celebrate safety:
● Never allow children to handle or ignite fireworks.
● Set off fireworks in a clear and open area.
● Do not use fireworks if under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
● Be aware of your head and hands.
● Refrain from relighting malfunctioning fireworks.
● Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of fire.
