Newsweek Ranks Barrow No. 13 Globally, No. 10 Nationally for Neurosurgery

PHOENIX (Sept. 26, 2023) – Newsweek has again named Barrow Neurological Institute one of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals for Neurosurgery.

In its third year of ranking hospitals in neurosurgery, the media company continues to recognize Barrow as No. 1 in the Southwest and No. 10 in the nation. The Institute climbed two spots globally, sitting at No. 13 for 2024. The list includes 125 hospitals total.

Newsweek curated lists for 12 different categories to inform consumers who are seeking the highest level of care within each specialty. The rankings culminate the results of a worldwide survey, conducted in partnership with the global research firm Statista, to which tens of thousands of medical professionals were invited to participate. The survey asked respondents to recommend hospitals based on their expertise in one primary medical field, with the option of choosing a secondary area of expertise.

“Newsweek has again recognized Barrow as one of the elite neurosurgical centers in the world,” said Barrow President and CEO Michael T. Lawton, MD. “I am gratified by this recognition because we have been working hard to enhance our patient experience with new buildings and offices, recruit the best talent to our team, and push the boundaries of neuroscience to find new procedures and therapies for our most challenging problems.”

Barrow is home to 11 state-of-the-art neurosurgery-dedicated operating rooms and two advanced neuroendovascular suites. It is the largest neuroscience center in the nation, featuring the 430,300-square-foot Robert F. Spetzler Neuroscience Tower and the recently constructed 122,000-square-foot Neuroplex. Barrow also employs more certified neuroscience registered nurses (CNRN) than any other facility in the United States.

Because of the Institute’s high volume of patients, Barrow neurosurgeons see some of the rarest and most challenging conditions. It’s not uncommon for patients to travel across the globe to undergo neurosurgery at Barrow, often beginning with the online Second Opinion Program.

Additionally, the Institute has long served as a destination for neurosurgery education. Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals, ranks Barrow No. 2 for neurosurgery residency programs in its 2023-24 Residency Navigator. The designation is based on program reputation.

“We are relentless in our pursuit of improvement and excellence,” Dr. Lawton said. “This jump in ranking reinforces all we do here at Barrow, and I am certain that Barrow will continue to flourish in the years ahead.”
