Rating showcases Sequoia's continuing commitment to excellence

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2020)Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital was again recognized with a 5-Star Overall Hospital Rating—the highest possible—for the quality of its care from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Only 407 out of the more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated nationwide by CMS received a 5-star rating.

“Our exceptional physicians, nurses, and staff deliver clinical excellence and heartfelt compassion to our community,” said Bill Graham, Sequoia Hospital president. “We strive for excellence, and this recognition sets Sequoia apart from other hospitals in our region for the quality of care we provide.”

The Overall Hospital Rating is based on hospital inpatient and outpatient quality program data. Hospitals are rated on up to 57 quality measures including cardiac surgery, treatment of heart failure, treatment of stroke, joint replacement, wait time in the ER, and many others. These measures fall into five broad categories: outcomes, intermediate outcomes, patient experience, access, and process. The overall hospital rating is calculated using a summary score from these categories. The national average is three out of five stars.

The 5-Star Overall Hospital Rating is one of several quality recognitions Sequoia Hospital has recently received. In Fall 2019, Sequoia received its seventh consecutive “A” grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group. Additionally, Sequoia received national recognition from Healthgrades for treatment of stroke and heart failure, as well as other Healthgrades awards for services that align with quality measures assessed for the CMS Overall Hospital Rating, such as cardiac surgery.
