St. Mary’s Medical Center Earns National Award for Quality

Posted in:

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Dec. 5, 2018) – Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center was named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group. St. Mary’s is one of only 53 hospitals nationwide to receive this honor.

The Top Hospital Award comes following St. Mary’s “A” Hospital Safety Grade, also from the Leapfrog Group.

“St. Mary’s is committed to providing top quality education and experience for the next generation of caregivers, and we’re very pleased to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group for this work,” said John Allen, St. Mary’s Medical Center president. “Students and residents at St. Mary’s are learning within one of the largest hospital systems in the nation and the largest not-for-profit acute care provider in California, with an emphasis on quality, safety, and humankindness.”

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey and achieve highest performance in its category. The selection of Top Hospitals 2018 is based on surveys from nearly 1,900 hospitals. To see the full list of institutions honored as 2018 Top Hospitals, visit www.leapfroggroup.org/tophospitals.

This recognition is the latest of several St. Mary’s has received recently. St. Mary’s also received honors from Healthgrades for quality care in heart attack, treatment of pneumonia, small intestine surgeries, treatment of bowel obstruction, treatment of sepsis, and treatment of diabetic emergencies. Additionally, St. Mary’s was recognized by Healthgrades as among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for gastrointestinal care.
