St. Mary’s Medical Center Awards Over $100,000 in Grants to Three Local Nonprofits

Grants include $40,000 for a program to help victims of domestic violence

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Feb. 12, 2019) – Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center  has awarded more than $100,000 in grants to three local nonprofit organizations through its annual community grants program. Each nonprofit was recognized for its commitment to providing innovative resources and support to improve quality of life for San Franciscans most in need.

“Community partners help us care for our patients outside the hospital’s walls,” said St. Mary’s Medical Center President John Allen. “These partnerships align closely with our mission and meet the unique health needs of San Francisco.”

Grants were awarded to the following organizations:

• La Casa de las Madres: $40,000 for the Domestic Violence High Risk Program in partnership with the Rally Family Visitation Center and the San Francisco Police Department to identify and respond to high risk, potentially lethal domestic violence cases, connect victims to support services and care sooner, and ensure involved families are given safe options for visitation.  
  
  
• 18 Reasons: $20,880 for six-week cooking and nutrition classes provided free of charge to 240 low-income adults and families to help address underlying causes of diet-related diseases and obesity. Partnering with the YMCA and FoodsCo, the program seeks to build community capacity through collaboration, while teaching life skills to San Francisco’s most vulnerable populations.
  
  
• Shanti Project: $57,000 for the San Francisco Care and Justice Alliance Program, supporting HIV/AIDS clients with health and legal interventions through services from the Shanti Project, the Justice and Diversity Center (JDC) of the Bar Association of San Francisco, and the AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP). 

The community grants were awarded in January. St. Mary’s has awarded yearly community grants since the early 1990s to promote health and wellness in the San Francisco community.
