St. Mary’s Medical Center Receives ‘A’ for Patient Safety in Spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade Awards

Posted in:

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 15, 2019) – Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center has received an ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group for its efforts to protect patients from harm and meet the highest safety standards in the U.S.

The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.

“This honor speaks to the unwavering commitment to quality each and every one of our team members displays daily,” said St. Mary’s Medical Center President John Allen. “We are thrilled to have our mission to provide our patients with exceptional, quality-driven care affirmed in this way.”

Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

This recognition is the latest honor St. Mary’s Medical Center has received recently. In March, St. Mary’s also earned National Accreditation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons—an honor bestowed on only 30 percent of hospitals nationwide. St. Mary’s also received honors from Healthgrades for excellence in the areas of heart attack, sepsis, diabetic emergencies, and pneumonia services—as well as recognition for being among the top 10 percent in the nation for gastrointestinal care.
