SAN FRANCISCO, CA (June 18, 2019) – Dignity Health is pleased to announce the appointment of David Klein, MD, MBA, as President and CEO of Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center, located in San Francisco, effective June 18. Dr. Klein joined Dignity Health in 2016 as President and CEO of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, and will also retain that position.
As a clinical leader, Dr. Klein’s highest priorities are high-quality care, hospital safety, and an excellent patient experience across all services. Additionally, Dr. Klein has led a significant financial turnaround of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital during his tenure. Through close collaboration with a talented leadership team, Dr. Klein worked to build and grow key programs, including an expansion of the Bothin Burn Center, development of an extensive orthopedics and sports medicine program, and launch of the Saint Francis Gender Institute, a comprehensive, nationally known surgical program for transgender patients.
Dr. Klein has also focused on maintaining the hospital’s strong connection to the community. In the heart of San Francisco’s tenderloin neighborhood, Saint Francis has been particularly dedicated to improving the social determinants of health through the Tenderloin Health Improvement Project and several other local organizations.
“Dr. Klein is an effective leader who is dedicated to mission-driven health care, and we are excited to welcome him to St. Mary’s,” said Todd Strumwasser, MD, Northern California Division President for Dignity Health. “Dr. Klein has an impressive track record of prioritizing hospital quality and safety measures, and always putting our patients first.”
Prior to Dignity Health, Dr. Klein served as president of Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Klein practiced general surgery for 14 years before becoming a full-time hospital administrator. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California, a medical degree from University of New Mexico, and a master’s degree in business administration from University of California, Irvine.
