St Marys Performs 100th Spine Surgery with Mazor Renaissance Guidance System

Posted in:
The Spine Center at Dignity Health St. Mary's Medical Center has completed its 100th surgery using the Mazor Renaissance™ Guidance System. St. Mary's is the only hospital in the Bay Area to exclusively offer this state-of-the-art technology for spine surgery.

"Our skillful surgeons confidently treat the most complex spinal surgery cases thanks to the unparalleled accuracy of the Mazor robotics system," said Michael Carter, interim president of St. Mary's Medical Center. "For patients needing spine surgery, this cutting-edge technology allows for fewer complications and revisions, as well as a faster recovery time.

The Mazor surgical robot, which is the size of a 12-ounce beverage can, enables fast and precise placement of spinal implants. During surgery, the system guides the surgeon's hand and tools to the precise pre-planned location, avoiding nerves, blood vessels, and other vital structures such as nearby joints.

"Millimeters make a difference," said James Zucherman, MD, a surgeon at St. Mary's Spine Center. "The Mazor system enables us to virtually map the size and trajectory of each screw before the surgery. Our patients tend to experience less discomfort and achieve higher surgical success rate."

This robot-assisted surgery supports more accurate implant placement during lumbar and thoracic spine fusions, and treats patients suffering from debilitating back pain or limited range of motion caused by spinal deformities and degenerative conditions such as slipped vertebrae, scoliosis, kyphosis, and spinal nerve impingement.

St. Mary's has the longest continuously operating multidisciplinary spine center in the western United States. Since 1982, the Spine Center has provided patients with access to the most advanced surgical techniques available, which include Mazor, X-Stop, I-Fuse®, artificial disc replacement, and motion preservation devices.
