Hospital receives nine total awards from Healthgrades

SAN FRANCISCO (Oct. 22, 2019)Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center has been recognized as a leader in heart attack care for three consecutive years by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. In total, St. Mary’s Medical Center received nine awards in the areas of cardiac, pulmonary, gastrointestinal care, and critical care.

“We’re honored to be recognized by Healthgrades for heart attack care,” said David Klein, MD, MBA, president and CEO of St. Mary’s Medical Center. “St. Mary’s offers advanced cardiac technology through our hybrid suite, and our caregivers are committed to providing high-quality, world-class care in a community hospital setting,”

This achievement is part of the Healthgrades 2020 Report to the Nation, which underscores the importance of hospital quality to both consumers and hospital leaders. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and additionally analyzes outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states.

St. Mary’s received five-star awards for treatment of heart attack, treatment of pneumonia, treatment of GI bleed, treatment of bowel obstruction, and treatment of sepsis. A 5-star rating indicates that clinical outcomes at St. Mary’s are better than expected in these areas. St. Mary’s also received the Healthgrades Excellence Award for gastrointestinal care and critical care, and was named among the top 10 percent in the nation for critical care and overall GI services.

About the Report

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
