How Mako Works

Mako surgery is performed by a trained orthopedic surgeon who uses Mako System software and a robotic arm tool to remove diseased bone and cartilage with extreme precision and implant a replacement that accurately fits your individual anatomy.

Mako can be used for hip and knee replacement. Mako knee replacement offers two options: partial or total knee replacement. With partial knee, just one of the knee’s three compartments is replaced and the rest of the knee’s healthy tissue is spared. This is sometimes recommended for younger patients whose joint damage is confined to one area. With total knee replacement (the more common approach), all three compartments are replaced.

 

Step One: The Personalized Plan 
It all begins with a CT scan of your joint that is used to generate a 3D virtual model, which is loaded into the Mako System software and used to create your personalized pre-operative plan.
 
Step Two: The Operation
During surgery, your surgeon will guide the Mako robotic arm to perform your surgery based on your pre-operative plan. The system also allows your surgeon to adjust as needed. When the surgeon prepares the bone for the implant, the Mako system guides the surgeon and helps prevent moving outside the planned boundaries for a more accurate implant placement and alignment.
 
Step Three: After Surgery
Following surgery, your surgeon, nurses, and physical therapists will set goals with you to get you back on the move. They will closely monitor your condition and progress. Your surgeon may review an x-ray of your new joint with you.
 

Mako technology was designed to help surgeons provide patients with surgical plans based on their specific diagnoses and anatomies. By selectively targeting just the damaged part of the joint, your surgeon can replace it while helping to spare the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding it.
