Heart Healthy Lifestyle

A review of a heart healthy lifestyle. Class topics in-clude whole food diet, meal planning, cooking, shop-ping, and physical activity for prevention and manage-ment of illnesses related to heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol/triglycerides, and high blood pressure.

Weight Loss

Small Steps to a Healthier Weight. Monthly class series to help you LOSE weight and improve overall health.

Monthly topics include:

  • Fad diets–cutting calories
  • Hydration/health drinks
  • Food labels and portion control
  • Exercise
  • Sugar, fat, and fiber

Classes are held in the Memorial Hospital Learning Center from 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM

Diabetes Education

The Center for Healthy Living offers a Diabetes Overview and Prevention class monthly to the public in both English and Spanish.  Call for more information: (661) 541-0124.  For individualized Diabetes Self-Management Education we have an outpatient Diabetes Clinic, staffed by Certified Diabetes Educators.  Education provided is often covered by insurance plans with provider referral.  Call for more information.

Cardiopulmonary Rehab

Heart disease doesn’t start when the diagnosis is made and it doesn’t end when the Patient is discharged from the hospital, it took years to develop to the point where treatment is necessary and Rehabilitation also takes time. Qualifying events to participate in phase II include heart attack, angioplasty or stent procedure, CABG or Valve replacement, chest pain (angina), heart/lung transplant, CHF with NYHA class III or greater, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis or emphysema.

Better Breathers Club

Living with a chronic lung disease can be easier. Better Breathers Clubs are welcoming support groups for individuals with chronic lung disease and their caregivers. Learn better ways to cope with conditions such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma while getting the support of others in similar situations. Led by a trained facilitator, these in-person adult support groups give you the tools you need to live the best quality of life you can.

This Better Breathers Club will held on the second Tuesday of every month at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield. All Club sessions begin at 10 AM.
