
Memorial Hospital and Mercy Southwest join Dignity Health hospitals across California earning the most safety awards than any other health system in the state
Memorial Hospital earns five “Straight A”, Hospital Safety Grades from The Leapfrog Group, and Mercy Hospital Southwest received a consecutive “A” grade rating for the Spring 2025 cycle
BAKERSFIELD, CA, MAY 1, 2025 – Dignity Health—Memorial Hospital and Mercy Hospital Southwest earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

Additionally, both hospitals have been honored with 2025 "Best Of" Bakersfield Readers Choice Awards. Memorial Hospital earned “Best Hospital” in the Bakersfield Californian 2025 Best of Readers’ Awards. Mercy Hospital Southwest was named “A Favorite” hospital.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in
the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
