Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Surgery
At Mercy Medical Center Redding, we use a robotic assisted surgical procedure to treat severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), or acid reflux. While traditional fundoplication surgery uses a long abdominal incision, the robotic assisted system eliminates the need for a long incision.
The surgeon makes a series of 1-2 cm incisions to introduce a specialized surgical camera developed especially to help surgeons perform complex, minimally invasive surgical procedures. The system allows for a more precise operation.
Benefits of the Robotic Assisted Procedure
For most patients, robotic assisted surgery offers many potential benefits over traditional open surgery, including:
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
- Less blood loss and fewer transfusions
- Less pain and scarring
- Less risk of wound infections
- Shorter hospital stay
