Mercy San Juan Medical Center today announced that it has received the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ from Healthgrades, a leading provider of comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. This prestigious distinction places Mercy San Juan among the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for clinical performance.
"At Mercy San Juan Medical Center, we strive to provide high quality care to our patients every day," said Brian Ivie, President of Mercy San Juan. "We are honored to receive the award and will continue to make clinical quality a top priority at our hospital."
Mercy San Juan Medical Center was one of 262 hospitals named this year that stand out above the rest for its overall clinical care across a broad spectrum of care. While many hospitals have specific areas of expertise and high-quality outcomes in certain areas, these hospitals exhibit comprehensive high-quality care across multiple clinical specialties. From 2009 through 2011, Healthgrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence as a group, had an overall 30.9 percent lower risk adjusted mortality rate as compared to other hospitals that did not achieve the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award (across 18 common inpatient conditions and procedures).
In recent years, while there has been considerable improvement in hospital quality, disparities among hospitals persist, and hospital quality can vary significantly even within local service areas. For example, in the areas of Sacramento and Roseville, out of 14 hospitals evaluated for treatment of Sepsis, there was a wide variation in hospital performance as measured by risk adjusted mortality rates (from 4.9% on the low end to 25.0% on the high end). Mercy San Juan Medical Center is among the hospitals the Sacramento area listed above with some of the best possible quality care.
"Today, consumers have unprecedented access to information on hospital performance as it relates to specific conditions and procedures so that they can make more informed decisions about who to see and where to go for care," said Evan Marks, EVP Informatics and Strategy. "The Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence enables hospitals to communicate their commitment to providing outstanding patient care and to show their continued efforts to improve clinical outcomes."

Healthgrades Hospital Quality Distinctions
Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for over 4,500 hospitals across the nation in 28 procedures and conditions annually. Healthgrades.com provides information on objective measures of hospital performance, which allows consumers to compare their local hospitals online at www.healthgrades.com/find-a-hospital. Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for nearly every hospital in the nation; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated. Mortality and complication rates are risk adjusted, which takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally.
