Comprehensive Stroke Center

Mercy San Juan Medical Center is the first hospital north of the Bay Area to earn The Joint Commission’s new advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center certification, recognizing the hospital for its ability to treat the most complex stroke cases and provide 24/7 access to neurology, neurosurgery, neurointerventional radiology, and neurocritical care. The new certification also reflects the hospital’s capabilities and investments, particularly related to:

  • Vascular neurosurgery services
  • Use of advanced imaging technologies to diagnose and treat stroke patients
  • Ongoing stroke-related research and commitment to public education of stroke
  • Participation in clinical trials
  • Existence of a dedicated neurointensive care unit

The Numbers Have It

This Comprehensive Stroke Center certification reflects our investment in the latest diagnostic technologies and imaging equipment and recognizes our ability to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. A sampling of qualifying statistics include:

  • Dignity Health Neurological Institute treated over 2,400 acute stroke cases (intracerebral, subarachnoid and ischemic) in 2013; Mercy San Juan Medical Center treated nearly 750 stroke patients (495 ischemic and 251 hemorrhagic) in the 12 months ending March 2014
  • 92% of eligible acute ischemic stroke patients were treated with IV tPA in less than 60 minutes between April 2013 and March 2014, compared to the mere 50% required to be on the Target Stroke Honor Roll established by the American Stroke Association
  • 95% of stroke patients at Mercy San Juan Medical Center received all eight Primary Stroke Center measures designated by The Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association in the last 12 months ending March 2014, compared to The Joint Commission’s composite performance rate of 85%
