Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair

Dignity Health Heart and Vascular Institute of Greater Sacramento is among select providers in the nation to offer patients Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (TMVR)—a minimally invasive cardiology procedure to treat moderate/severe to severe mitral regurgitation.

What is TMVR?

TMVR is a minimally invasive procedure that treats severe leakage of the mitral valve without requiring open heart surgery. The procedure is FDA-approved for patients who are high-risk for surgical mitral valve repair.

TMVR uses the MitraClip®, which is inserted via the femoral vein. The anterior and posterior leaflets of the mitral valve are clipped together, reducing the regurgitation from the mitral valve.

Benefits of TMVR

Because TMVR is minimally invasive, it offers a number of benefits for the cardiology patient, including:

  • Faster recovery time
  • Less pain
  • Improved quality of life

Patients who undergo TMVR to replace their mitral valve experienced a 73% reduction in hospitalizations due to heart failure.

All TMVR procedures are performed in a hybrid catheterization lab, using general anesthesia and advanced trans-esophageal echocardiography.
