Located in the heart of Downtown LA, California Hospital Medical Center is a 318-bed non-profit hospital that has been providing the residents of Los Angeles with quality, compassionate care for over 130 years.
A recognized leader in excellence, innovation and community service, California Hospital Medical Center provides a full-continuum of acute care services, including a Level II Trauma Center, state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Keith P. Russell Women's Birthing Center, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), seven operating suites, and a free-standing Los Angeles Center for Women's Health. With the busiest private Trauma Center in Los Angeles County and the 13th largest center for births in California, we offer a unique balance of leading technology and quality care delivered by more than 450 physicians and 1,700 employees.

Healthgrades named Dignity Health – California Hospital Medical Center a Five-Star Recipient in the areas of Heart Failure, Hip Fracture Treatment, Pneumonia, and Sepsis Treatments. A Five-Star rating indicates that the hospital’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

California Hospital has earned an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) designation that ensures we have the staff and technology needed to provide immediate care to young patients.
Primary Stroke Center
California Hospital has received a Certificate of Distinction for Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. The hospital achieved this status for its proven ability to provide effective, timely care to stroke victims and significantly improve their outcomes, and for demonstrating compliance with national, evidence-based standards for stroke care.
Practice Greenhealth Emerald Award
Protecting our planet remains a top priority for California Hospital. Our green efforts were recognized by Practice Greenhealth who honored our facility with an “Emerald Award” in 2021 for setting the standard in eliminating mercury, reducing and recycling waste, and embracing sustainability as a core part of our culture. We were also honored for demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and showing leadership in our local community and in the health care sector.
Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award
California Hospital was awarded the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award in 2021. This award highlights the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment, according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, and the latest scientific evidence.
Along with the Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, California Hospital also received the American Heart Association’s Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll and the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award. The Stroke Elite Honor Roll recognition confirms that the time between a patient’s arrival at California Hospital and receiving stroke blood clot-busting medication is reduced. The Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award ensures patients with type 2 diabetes receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized with cardiovascular disease or stroke.
Human Rights Equality Honors
Through our continued efforts to boost health care equality for all, California Hospital has been recognized as an Equality Leader by the 2022 Human Rights Campaign's Healthcare Equality Index. This rigorous national benchmarking tool evaluates health care facilities' policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of LGBTQ+ patients, visitors, and employees.
C-Section Honor Roll
California Hospital made California Health and Human Services’ C-Section Honor Roll in 2018 along with 122 hospitals that met or surpassed a federal target aimed at reducing births via Cesarean section in first-time mothers with low-risk pregnancies.
