Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissue that causes swelling in the extremities and/or torso. It can develop when the lymphatic vessels are absent, underdeveloped or obstructed and are unable to reabsorb and transport fluid.
Lymphedema may begin with an unexplained swelling of the arm or leg. Your limb may feel full, heavy, or tight. If left untreated, the swelling may increase and harden the tissue leading to further complications.
