Nursing Transition to Practice

The Nursing Transition to Practice (TPP) Program at St. Joseph’s works with undergraduate/student nurses throughout the transition to graduate and then to resident.

Participants develop clinical and professional skills in a nurturing environment that promotes clinical judgment and eases the transition from student to registered nurse (RN) in the workplace. By providing a positive work experience, we foster a commitment and bond to the organization, thereby facilitating the recruitment and retention of nursing professionals at St. Joseph’s. The positions under this program are paid positions and candidates must apply and complete the interview and hiring process.

Nursing Transition Roles include the following:

  • RN Extern – nursing student who has not graduated yet; works alongside an RN preceptor for 2-4 shifts per month
  • RN Resident – licensed Registered Nurse; hired by St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center as a new graduate and participates in a one-year residency program

St. Joseph’s follows research guidelines indicating that hiring new graduate nurses in cohorts improves retention rates. Therefore, RN Externs and RN Residents are only hired at pre-determined cohort time periods, typically coinciding with academic graduation dates, NCLEX testing operations, St. Joseph’s academic partnership programs and key stakeholder recommendations.

The TPP program is designed to work with the other education programs at SJHMC, including unit orientation, hospital orientation, 101 courses, and online adjuncts.

In addition, every RN resident is required to complete a quality improvement/evidence-based practice project that will be presented to their peers and other hospital employees at a graduation celebration.
