St. Joseph's Family Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency!

St. Joseph’s Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is a fully accredited, diverse, unique and comprehensive three year post-graduate learning experience that prepares residents to provide complete, competent and compassionate care in any practice setting. Our program offers 8 - PGY1 positions per year and is located in central Phoenix; serving multi-cultural patients in a Patient Centered Medical Home. When not training in our PCMH, family medicine residents benefit from close collaboration with other services, residents, fellows, sub-specialties and internationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute.

We put the FAMILY in Family Medicine.

Our Patients
Providers at SJHMC have the luxury of caring for patients from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Special mention should be given to the large refugee population in Phoenix who come to us for care. We have special maternity group programs for our Somali, Nepalese, Iraqi and Burmese patients. We offer diabetic group visits. Opportunities also exist for rural medicine, dealing mostly with Indian reservations.

Community Focused
SJHMC FM residents are heavily involved in the community. Outside of community volunteer projects, education and outreach we also spend time at St. Vincent de Paul; a free clinic caring for primarily pediatric patients that have no other access to healthcare.

Area of Concentration
One of the features of family medicine is its breadth. While you will get exceptional training in all aspects of family medicine, our program includes an area of concentration, which allows you to focus on honing your skills in a specific field through electives, quality improvement projects, and research. Past residents have focused OB, sports medicine, minority health/health disparities, and geriatrics but you can choose whatever you like! We believe you should make your residency training unique to you.

Hospital and Clinic Facilities
SJHMC is a large, level I trauma center which will allow you to experience all sorts of pathology. The hospital itself has modern facilities and uses Cerner Powerchart for its EMR. It also features a gym, library, ample amount of computers, a resident lounge, a cafeteria (with sushi!) and a Starbucks. The clinic itself features computers in every exam room as well as being fully equipped with medical equipment. Our program also has it’s very own fully equipped call room with 3 sleep rooms, a functional kitchenette, workstations and flat screen televisions in each room.

Patient Centered Medical Home
Enjoy all the benefits of having a clinic that is a Patient Centered Medical Home. Our clinic is home to primary care practitioners, diabetes education and group visits, Coumadin clinic, social workers, behavioral health professionals and adolescent health.

Multiple Rotation Sites
Our residents rotate primarily at SJHMC, but also gain experience at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Maricopa Medical Center, and a few other places. This exposure to different settings broadens our knowledge and helps create links to other physicians in the community.

Friday Block Conference
We have a dedicated afternoon on Fridays for teaching that is protected time for the interns and all seniors unless they are managing the inpatient service.  Procedure workshops are also given throughout the year and include basic and advanced suturing, wound repair, OB ultrasound, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, IUD insertion, circumcision, splinting, casting and joint injections. We love having a set time away from our rotations where we will be together with our residency family. The residents usually set aside time to socialize after our weekly Friday block conference, kids and dogs are welcome.
