Dignity Health works in pursuit of one goal: The best possible care for every person we treat
Neurological care at Dominican Hospital involves using some of the most advanced technology available to offer treatments ranging from physical therapy to minimally invasive surgery. In fact, Dominican is one of the only hospitals in the Monterey Bay Region to offer minimally invasive surgery for spinal fractures.
Comprehensive Care For Back And Spine Pain
When Surgery Is Needed—First, the Minimally Invasive Approach
When your back pain can’t be relieved through non-invasive treatment, our neurosurgeon, Dr. Ciara Harraher with Stanford, use the most technologically advanced procedures and equipment available to perform a wide range of interventions. Whenever possible, we look first to a minimally invasive approach. It requires much smaller incisions that can cause less pain, and lead to a faster recovery.
Some common minimally invasive spinal procedures are:
- Laminectomy—is surgery that creates space by removing the lamina — the back part of the vertebra that covers your spinal canal. Also known as decompression surgery, laminectomy enlarges your spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
- Discectomy—is the surgical removal of herniated disc material that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord. The procedure involves removing the central portion of an intervertebral disc, which causes pain by stressing the spinal cord or radiating nerves.
- Kyphoplasty—the surgical filling of an injured or collapsed vertebra. This procedure restores original shape and configuration and relieves pain from spinal compression.
- Fusion—Spinal fusion is surgery to permanently connect two or more vertebrae in your spine, eliminating motion between them. During spinal fusion, your surgeon places bone or a bone-like material within the space between two spinal vertebrae. Metal plates, screws and rods may be used to hold the vertebrae together, so they can heal into one solid unit.
Safer, More Advanced Brain and Spinal Surgery
Spine or brain surgery is now safer and patients no longer experience a painful, lengthy recovery. Today at Dominican, our O-Arm Surgical Imaging System offers the most advanced 3D imaging system for brain and spine surgery.
At Dominican Hospital, we offer non-invasive treatment to relieve back pain.
