Lymphedema Therapy

If you have or are at risk for lymphedema, our program offers convenient access to specialized lymphedema therapy, education and support. Lymphedema happens most often after surgery and/or radiation therapy for breast cancer or other types of cancer.

In Dominican Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Center’s lymphedema therapy program, our certified lymphedema therapists provide treatment, while helping you to manage and control your condition.

Lymphedema Signs and Symptoms

With lymphedema, blocked, damaged or missing lymphatic vessels can cause noticeable swelling and hardness in any part of your body, most often in the arms and legs. For example, you may have visible swelling, a sensation of fullness, heaviness and/or skin tightness, and decreased flexibility and joint mobility. Lymphedema can be painful and may limit your ability to comfortably and effectively complete tasks of daily living like getting dressed. Having lymphedema can keep you from feeling good about yourself.

Lymphedema Treatment

People with lymphedema can optimize their lymphatic function and live fulfilling lifestyles, at home, at work, and in the community. Therapy interventions, like those offered through Dominican Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, combined with patient self-management, can reduce and stabilize lymphedema symptoms.

Our staff includes CLT and LANA-certified physical and occupational therapists who establish a patient’s treatment plan based on medical necessity. The treatment plan may include:

    Manual lymphatic drainage

    Exercise program

    Compression garments

    Skin care

    Education

    Ongoing self-management techniques

We can help you manage lymphedema over the long-term and stop it from controlling your life. To access our services, please contact your physician for a referral.
