Only 95 hospitals nationwide received this distinction

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. (January 9, 2018) – Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center announced that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification in Inpatient Diabetes Care. St. Mary’s is the only hospital in the Bay Area and one of 95 hospitals nationwide to receive this distinction.

“This national designation demonstrates our multidisciplinary team’s continued commitment to providing comprehensive care that includes education and tailored treatment plans for our patients with diabetes,” said John Allen, St. Mary’s Medical Center interim president. “We are dedicated to helping patients successfully manage this chronic disease, and are proud to instill confidence in the community we serve by providing the highest quality diabetes care.”

St. Mary’s underwent a voluntary, rigorous on-site review where Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as with inpatient diabetes-specific requirements. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures also were assessed.

Awarded for a two-year period, The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification in Inpatient Diabetes Care is based on the American Diabetes Association’s Clinical Practice Recommendations and addresses standards related to:

  • Staff education requirements
  • Written blood glucose monitoring protocols
  • Plans for the treatment of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
  • Data collection of incidences of hypoglycemia
  • Patient education on self-management of diabetes, and
  • An identified program champion or program champion team

St. Mary’s also offers a comprehensive outpatient diabetes education program certified by the American Diabetes Association. In addition to learning how to manage their diabetes, patients get hands-on experience tending to a vegetable garden at the hospital while learning how to grow their own healthy, diabetes-friendly foods in a small space. Watch a Facebook Live video about the vegetable garden.
