Superior Microsurgery Visualization System at St. John’s Regional Medical Center

Integrated Surgical Microscope Platform Enables the Highest Level of Precision in Procedures on the Tiniest and Most Delicate Tissues

OXNARD, CA - February 27, 2018 – St. John’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC), a Dignity Health hospital, is proud to announce its latest operating department technological advancement, the Zeiss OPMI Pentero 900 microscope. This new high-tech, minimally invasive surgical microscope uses fluorescence technology  to visualize tissue and blood vessels in delicate microsurgeries and delivers surgeons razor-sharp video images in full HD quality.

The OPMI Pentero visualization system is so powerful that it can check the flow of blood through tiny vessels that have been repaired during a procedure, including those in the brain. Laser-guided autofocus allows for precise navigation. The lenses are integrated with an HD viewing system that feeds relevant patient data and contrast views to the surgeon’s eyepiece, a large HD screen for supporting OR staff, and hospital computers for immediate workflow.

“This microscope allows enhanced surgical visualization of complex anatomical structures and regions for difficult open neurovascular procedures, along with improved fluorescence vascular imaging,” says Alois Zauner, MD, a Neurosurgeon at St. John’s Regional Medical Center.

This powerful intraoperative microscope, used for minimally invasive brain surgeries, is the latest addition to SJRMC’s new Neuroscience Center of Excellence. The Neuroscience Center of Excellence, which is part of the Modernization and Expansion Project currently underway at the hospital, includes the addition of a world class neuro-interventional biplane angiography system, as well as the additional program enhancements to perform brain clot removal, aneurysm repair, carotid artery stenting, advanced brain and next tumor removal and intracranial hemorrhage stoppage.

“The addition of this new operating room microscope, along with our enhanced programs and abilities in the field of neuroscience is one more example of fulfilling our promise to the community to provide the safest and highest of quality care coupled with the latest state-of-the-art technologies, said Darren Lee, President & CEO, St. John’s Hospitals. He adds, “No longer do our community members need to travel outside our community to receive world-class care. World-class care can be found right here in our own backyard and we will continue to provide our patients with the latest advancements and compassionate care.
