Couple Re-Marries at St. John’s Regional Medical Center to Celebrate Groom’s Recovery

OXNARD, CA – October 28, 2021 – The Acute Rehabilitation team at Dignity Health-St. John’s Regional Medical Center made a couple’s dream come true by hosting a wedding in the groom’s patient room.

David Christy and his now-wife, Wendy Christy, never imagined re-marrying each other in a hospital room. However, after David suffered two strokes on his birthday in early October, the couple knew there was no better time than now to make their union official.

“David’s condition was a good reminder to evaluate our priorities,” says Wendy Christy. “At one point he was so ill, and all I could think is, ‘I want to be married to him’.”

In celebration of the couple’s nuptials, the Acute Rehab team mobilized to arrange for David and Wendy’s pastor to officiate the marriage. The lovely couple exchanged vows while members of the care team witnessed from a distance. After the couple said, “I do,” the staff surprised the newlyweds with a wedding cake.

“This is exactly what we needed,” said David Christy when asked about his hospital wedding.

David and Wendy first met 35 years ago and married soon after. Early on in their relationship, they divorced and got back together two years later. Twenty-five years later, they are now once again husband and wife.
