What to Expect from the Cardiac Telemetry Unit at Dignity Health Central Coast

To best monitor your heart condition, especially if you are experiencing a problem, your doctor will admit you to one of our cardiac telemetry units. These special rooms inside our hospital are set up to electronically monitor all of your vital signs.

Your heart doctor may recommend telemetry monitoring for: 

  • Abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation
  • Chest pain accompanied by an unstable heart rhythm
  • Health procedures, such as cardioversion, to correct abnormal heart rhythms
  • Open heart surgery, both before and after your surgery

Using various sensors placed on your body, your telemetry nurse will carefully monitor all of your vital signs. An electrocardiogram (EKG, also called ECG) reads your heart rate and rhythm, while a monitor on your finger measures oxygen in your blood. A cuff on your arm continually takes your blood pressure.
