Symptoms of Vein Problems

One of the most common symptoms of blood vessel disorders is the unsightly appearance of large, varicose veins, usually in the legs. Other signs of a vein problem include swelling in a limb, such as the feet and hands, skin wounds that are slow to heal, and aches and pains.

In some cases, venous problems can become life-threatening if a blood clot moves into a vessel in the lungs.

Causes of Vein Problems

Blood vessel disorders are caused by damage to valves inside the veins which help control blood flow in the venous system. These one-way valves function to help move blood toward the heart. If these are damaged in any way, it can cause blood to collect in the vein, causing them to balloon out if the vein wall is weak. Swelling also occurs because the pooling blood causes the surrounding tissue to swell. This is most often seen in the legs.

Vein damage is often the result of extended sitting or standing, the process of aging, or a combination of reduced mobility and aging.
