Didactics - We have a well-designed and comprehensive didactic curriculum, including lectures by core faculty and numerous community specialists who share their expertise and experience. We are proud to have a curriculum which includes several procedure skills building workshops, ultrasound training, and didactics that enable the application of medical practice while addressing the barriers of socioeconomic status and disparity.

Call Schedule and Night Float - A night float system has been implemented eliminating any 24-hour calls throughout the three years. The system has been very popular among residents and ensures adherence to all ACGME guidelines while maintaining a focus on balanced work/life.

Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital - Senior residents manage patients with substantial independence working with a rural, underserved population. Designed as an "Attending Boot Camp." This training helps our residents gain confidence and experience in handling difficult cases and supplements their training at Methodist Hospital.

Diversity of patient population – The service area for the urban Methodist Hospital of Sacramento has one of the most integrated diversity of any community in the country according to US News and World Report.  The resident dependent service cares for the most vulnerable in our community.  At our rural site we treat seventh generation immigrant families and local native Americans from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada who have a deep relationship with our local rural community.

Global Health – There are global health opportunities including a curriculum and many partnerships available. Options include a domestic reservation experience to serve native populations, or an experience in underserved regions of India where our faculty and residents fight human trafficking and work in inpatient and outpatient settings (food, lodging, airfare paid, medical visas arranged).

Attendings - Our Family Medicine Faculty is energetic, eager to teach, and each with individual areas of expertise, providing a good blend of talents and experience. Attending physicians pride themselves on being approachable and capable teachers, with faculty having completed multiple leadership trainings such as the Fellowship in Faculty Development for family residency training.

We are a community-based, single residency program - Family Medicine Residents are the only residents in our hospitals performing all procedures or cases while on service. This prepares our residents to go into any kind of practice, from rural solo/small group practice, large group urban practices, hospitalist positions, faculty, fellowships, and more.

Behavioral Science - Our residents focus on the integration of the biopsychosocial model of patient care in both the clinic and inpatient setting. Our core faculty includes dual board-certified FM/Psych enhancing education in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Our program offers generous benefits - A Butterfly IQ Ultrasound, free access to food, physicians parking includes some of the added benefits. Up-To Date and other online medical references are provided to residents. AAFP annual dues, the first round of medical licensure fees ($900), DEA ($731) and contribution of $500 towards the ABFM board exam are covered by the program.

Our program's leadership is responsive to resident needs and concerns - Administration stands behind the residency program and is supportive of resident driven initiatives.

We have a very family-friendly program - Residents work hard and get plenty of experience, but there remains a focus for a balanced life outside of work as well. The schedule allows ample time to spend time with families and with each other socially.

Nevada County has many things to offer - Our community is home to many young families and is also a vacation destination for many. We have a vibrant art and music scene hosting nationally recognized artists frequently. Hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails interlace our community with close proximity to all kinds of other recreation and cultural events, including skiing, salmon fishing, camping, rock climbing, concerts, theater and much more.

Finally, our program is like a family - Faculty, residents and staff work hard to make this program great! We have frequent social events including picnics and informal get-togethers (amazing potlucks) and truly get to know one another. Our camaraderie is what makes this program a great place to learn and work, and we all enjoy being here!
