California Hospital Foundation Presents Hidden in Plain Sight

Dignity Health - California Hospital Medical Center Foundation is producing the next South Park Speaker's Series Symposium and partnered with Ashton Kutcher's non-profit organization, Thorn, which focuses on human trafficking and ways to combat it using technology.

What

Dignity Health’s Human Trafficking Response Program Director Holly Gibbs will be the event moderator. Holly is a human trafficking survivor, and she will be sharing her testimonial at the event. Holly hopes to provide comfort, strength, and help empower survivors as well as to train health care providers to provide better care to victims they encounter at hospitals. Dignity Health, one of the largest health care systems in the nation and the largest hospital provider in California, is uniquely positioned to impact facilities and communities across the country. Dignity Health continues to develop and share victim/patient-centered, trauma-informed, evidence-based best practices with others in the health care field.

Facts

The Human Trafficking “industry” has estimated worldwide revenues of $150 million. There are 2.4 million people in the process of being trafficked at any given moment. A 2014 study published in the Annals of Health Law found that nearly 88 percent of human trafficking victims reported contact with health care while they were being exploited. The study exposed how medical care providers are often “woefully unprepared” to identify and respond to victims of human trafficking. In 2015, there were over 5,500 cases of human trafficking reported in America, over 1,600 of which involved children and youth under the age of 18.
