Natural Hospital Birth with a Nurse-Midwife

Our hospital supports your decision for a natural birth.

Midwives believe that giving birth is a natural, healthy event. They work with mothers-to-be to make pregnancy and birth as natural as possible.

We work with the midwives at Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center, a group of certified nurse-midwife professionals. That means they have completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a post-graduate degree in nurse-midwifery practice. Two of our nurse-midwives also specialize in caring for diabetic expectant mothers.

Nurse-Midwife Deliveries

Natural deliveries at California Hospital allow moms-to-be to experience the comfort and control of a traditional birth center, as well as the peace of mind in knowing that medical intervention is readily available if necessary. With a nurse-midwife delivery, moms can have:

  • Active participation in decision making
  • A natural childbirth
  • A shower, if desired, during labor and after delivery
  • Breastfeeding and bonding support at birth
  • Freedom to walk, eat and drink while in labor
  • No routine IV or blood work while in labor
  • Treatment for pain, if preferred or requested

What Services Do Midwives Provide?

A midwife is a support-partner throughout your pregnancy. She pays close attention to your well-being – your physical, psychological, and social needs – for signs that you need help. She partners with an OB/GYN as needed to ensure that you have an informed team supporting your pregnancy.

Because they are licensed and certified healthcare professionals, our nurse-midwives provide a wide range of services throughout your pregnancy. They:

  • Counsel your after birth
  • Deliver your baby at the California Hospital Medical Center
  • Do gynecological examinations
  • Monitor your health, including diabetes, after the birth
  • Provide contraceptive counseling
  • Provide individualized education about your pregnancy and care needs
  • Take your medical history
  • Write prescriptions

Another skill that makes our nurse-midwives among the best: they have a high success rate in delivering babies by vaginal birth after c-sections (VBAC). Find out more about VBAC deliveries
