Serving the Community
Since 1910, Community Hospital of San Bernardino has provided health care and educational services. Our family centered environment is a non-profit, 343-bed, full service hospital offering acute inpatient and outpatient care, obstetrics and pediatrics, home health, behavioral health services, emergency and neurological care for children and adults. Through state-of-the-art technology and compassionate care, we continue our mission of excellent patient care.
When we first opened, we were known as Ramona Hospital and were located on the corner of 4th St. and Arrowhead. The hospital had just 42 beds. One of the challenges of the location was the two-story building since there were no elevators. Expectant mothers were carried upstairs on gurneys in order to deliver babies.
In 1953, the hospital purchased property on the corner of 17th St and Western Avenue, and launched the United Appeal for Hospital Beds. With much support from the community, we raised the money needed to construct a new hospital. Entertainer Sammy Davis Jr., whose life was saved at our hospital, joined the effort by hosting a gala, star-studded fundraiser. The new hospital opened with 133 beds, 30 bassinets and 275 employees.
As the community continued to grow, so did we. In 1987, through the generosity of the hospital's Foundation and Monida B. Cummings, a five-story patient care tower was constructed. In 1996, a 57,000 square foot, three-level medical office building was constructed and connected to the hospital by a bridge that spans Medical Center Drive.
Today, Community Hospital of San Bernardino stands as a 343-bed, non-profit hospital with more than 1,000 employees. Part of Dignity Health, we remain a non-denominational and are proud to be a trusted resource of community health services and educational support.
